Sterilisation
It is difficult for the Down's Syndrome Association to comment generally on the issue of enforced sterilisation for people with Down's syndrome because each case should be taken on its own merits.
We would expect and hope that sterilisation is the last option to be explored. There are many other forms of contraception available, as well as behaviour and assertiveness training. People with Down’s syndrome should receive appropriate sex education in order to enable them to make decisions for themselves.
There is often a misconception that sterilisation solves related problems, however, it won’t prevent potential abuse or feelings of sexual desire.
