Pre-natal testing
The Down's Syndrome Association does not consider Down's syndrome a reason for termination. People with Down's syndrome can and do lead full and rewarding lives.
The Association accepts that the offer of prenatal testing for Down's syndrome is now a routine part of antenatal care. For those women choosing to undergo testing, any test which can give a definite result early in pregnancy, without a risk of miscarriage, is considered to be more desirable than those available at present.
We strongly believe that any proposed testing for a genetic condition must be accompanied by broad and non-directive counselling. Individuals can then make informed decisions based on full and accurate information. This information should cover the role and limitations of the tests currently available; the reality of undergoing a late termination and the prospects the baby would have for a fulfilling life. A clear picture should be given of the improvement in life opportunities for people with Down’s syndrome in recent decades. Appropriate support must be provided regardless of the choices made.
