EDUCATION SUPPORT PACK FOR SPECIAL SCHOOLS

26/05/2004

The Down's Syndrome Association is launching its Education Support Pack for special schools just in time for Down's Syndrome Awareness Week 31st May to 6th June 2004

PRESS RELEASE– EMBARGOED UNTIL 27th May 2004

DSA LAUNCHES EDUCATION SUPPORT PACK FOR SPECIAL SCHOOLS

To coordinate with Down’s Syndrome Awareness Week, The Down’s Syndrome Association (DSA) has produced a pack of information and materials for Special Schools who teach children with Down’s syndrome.

The Education Support Pack for Special Schools has been produced – with support from the DfES - in the wake of the Down’s Syndrome Association’s Education Support Pack for Mainstream Schools which recently won the NASEN/TES Books for Teaching and Learning Award.

The Pack for Special Schools includes information on; dealing with challenging behaviour; methods for improving literacy; numeracy and communication; plus a wide range of curriculum-based differentiated teaching materials.  It also includes sections on Down’s syndrome and Autistic Spectrum Disorder and the changing role of Special Schools in ensuring children with Down’s syndrome are included in the wider community.

Carol Boys, Chief Executive of the Down’s Syndrome Association said:  “We aim to enhance the expertise of Special School staff with our practical, ready-to-use guidance notes and teaching materials and also to introduce new ideas, particularly in the area of including children with special needs in the wider community.  We hope this will be an inspiration in overcoming one of the perceived disadvantages of the Special School setting with the tendency for children to be excluded from the wider community.”

The Education Support Pack for Special Schools is available to download FREE from www.downs-syndrome.org.uk.   Alternatively, a printed version in a ring-binder for easy use, is available for £20 plus £5 P&P from the Down’s Syndrome Association.  Tel: to order.
