EDUCATION: PREPARATION FOR LIFE Publisher: DSA, 1995 Price: £5.00 This video (15 mins) shows aspects of the education of four children with Down's syndrome in a selection of mainstream and special schools. Available to order from the Down's Syndrome Association.
NOW WE'RE TALKING Author: The Symbol Trust, 2003 Price: £10.00 The video shows people with Down's syndrome, aged nought to thirty, who have differing abilities and needs in the area of communication. However all of them are keen to communicate, and have a great deal to say, given the right opportunities.
The Down's Syndrome Association is not able to supply the following books but you should be able to get copies from a good book shop or library.

Brookes 1997 An American title, which provides a holistic approach to the issues usrrounding adolescence in young people with Down's syndrome. Focuses on health, behaviour, self-esteem, education, employment and recreational activities.

DOWN SYNDROME: VISIONS FOR THE 21ST CENTURY Author: edited by William I. Cohen, Lynn Nadel and Myra E. Madnick Publisher: Wiley-Liss 2002 A comprehensive and up-to-date survey of current issues affecting people with Down's syndrome, including advocacy, medical, social and educational issues.
MANAGING PROBLEM BEHAVIOURS - A PRACTICAL GUIDE FOR PARENTS AND TEACHERS OF YOUNGCHILDREN WITH SPECIAL NEEDS Author: Susan Dodd Publisher: (Maclennan and Petty, 1994) Price: £25.00 Offers a range of easy to follow tips and strategies to help solve most behaviour problems in young children. Expensive for a paperback, but worth having a copy in each Branch or ordering from a public library.
NEED TO KNOW - DOWN'S SYNDROME Author: Kristina Routh Publisher: Harcourt Education 2005 This book in the Need to Know series provides essential information in an honest and down to earth manner. The book looks at what it's like to have Down's syndrome and dispels some of the misconceptions about people with the syndrome.
TEACHING READING TO CHILDREN WITH DOWN'S SYNDROME - A GUIDE FOR TEACHERS AND PARENTS Author: Patricia Logan Oelwein Publisher: (Woodbine House, 1995) Price: £15.50 Describes in detail a reading programme devised by an experienced American teacher which is imaginative and functional and can be tailored to the needs of each student
FRIENDS AT SCHOOL Author: Rochelle Bunnet Publisher: (Starbright Books 1995) Price: £6.95 Through lively colour photographs this book takes you through the day of an inclusive primary class where you are introduced to the children and shown the many activities that take place.
LIKE ME LIKE YOU - LUKE HAS DOWN'S SYNDROME Author: Jillian Powell Publisher: Evans Brothers Ltd, 2004 Price: £6.99 An excellent book for younger children that follows a day in the life of Luke who has Down's syndrome. Luke is shown learning to read and attending his weekly cub scouts' meeting.
OUR BROTHER HAS DOWN'S SYNDROME Author: Shelley Cairo Publisher: (Annick Press Ltd, 1991) Price: £3.99 A positive, realistic book that can be used for explaining Down's syndrome to young siblings and other young children. (Some of the language is now a little out of date, but still a useful book.)
RED SKY IN THE MORNING Author: Elizabeth Baird Publisher: (Heinemann, 1988) Price: £5.25 A teenager comes to terms with the notion of disability when her brother is born with severe disabilities. Suitable for older children and teenagers
THUMBS UP, RICO ! Author: Maria Testa Publisher: (Albert Whitman & Co. 1994) Price: £14.95 In three separate stories in this beautifully illustrated book, Rico who has Down's syndrome makes a new friend, helps his sister with a difficult decision and finally draws a picture that he likes.
WHERE'S CHIMPY? Author: Bernice Rabe Publisher: (Albert Whitman & Co, 1988) Price: £4.90 A story for young children, with lovely photographs, in which the main character has Down's syndrome.
WHY AM I DIFFERENT ? Author: Norma Simon Publisher: (Albert Whitman & Co, 1976) Price: £4.95 A book for young children. It does not discuss disability itself, but difference more generally, e.g. height, where we live, different occupations. Can be used in conjunction with books on specific disabilities.
